Case Study – Gateshead Central Library
Project Overview
We recently completed an installation at Gateshead Central Library, where we were commissioned to design and build a bespoke “easy access” picnic bench suitable for people with limited mobility.
The aim was to create an inclusive, practical and visually appealing seating area that complements the library’s outdoor space while ensuring accessibility for all users.
The Challenge
- Improved accessibility for wheelchair users and individuals with limited mobility
- Comfortable and practical seating
- A design that aligned with the surrounding environment
- A durable, long-lasting structure suitable for public use
Our traditional A-Frame picnic bench configuration did not fully meet accessibility requirements, so our design team re-engineered the structure to provide enhanced access and ease of use.
The Design Process
Several design iterations were submitted to the library team to ensure the final solution met both functional and aesthetic expectations.
- Adjusted frame structure to allow easier wheelchair positioning
- Improved legroom and table overhang
- Enhanced stability and strength
- Maintained the classic appearance while improving usability
After careful review and collaboration, the final design was approved and moved into production.
